Beginning Story:

Maria the Virgin Witch previous painting

-Story Insight:

In France, Joan of Arc has been burned at the stake. The slaughter of The Hundred Years’ War is occurring between the French and invading Englishmen. All of the youths know in their lifetime is death, war, plague, and pillaging by the Englishmen or hired mercenaries. This war is about to affect a small French town until a youthful blonde beauty comes to light up her fireworks. Here enters Maria into the battle field!!! This perky pretty petite will be a perpetual Praline of purity as the punky princess of peril perfectly performs phases from old pages to put the fear and panic into the pungent predators of warfare. In other words, she uses succubi, incubi, hexes, and summonings to foil and scare the men away from battle. As she gets her quick victories, the Valkyries and mercenaries grow impatient as an ungodly imbalance occurs. Oh, what do you do with a girl named Maria?

Oh Maria

For this plot Archangel Michael, who forcefully summons her before him, sets godly judgment onto Maria. As for her punishment, he sets limitations onto her magical abilities. She mustn’t lose her virginity or perform magic in the eye of the public. He sends his heavenly spear Ezekiel to chaperone Maria’s misconduct. The Archangel uses Ezekiel as his eyes. While maintaining her virginity and pursuing her purpose of providing pharmaceuticals in answer to the pleas of her small village, what can Maria do against the pesky piety of the psycho perverse Catholic priests and the pub hopping lives of the ponderous mercenaries in their plights opposing the British or local villagers? Easy, do it anyway and don’t get caught.

Maria is soo not using her magic

Like duh, Maria is full of moxie as those archangel rules are just full of poxy.

Ezekiel is dizzyUhh, where is the magic coming from?

Production quality:

-Animation:

I really enjoyed the animation. It was eye catching, fits the setting and story book ascetic, and with how it’s drawn I can see the people being native to Europe. No animation flaws upon my many viewings of this show. When some scene is in front of an angelic power or being from old, the presence is known and the different lighting or stylizing does signify a higher power without it feeling cliché.

Animation Rating: 3.75/5 (B)Maria and Joseph paraore date

-Sound:

From what I can hear, the sound effects were spot on, and the magic using has a bit of whimsy. When swords were clashed, the appropriate sound effect would occur. The opening and its song ‘Philosophy of Dear World’ by ZAQ is hypnotic and properly jingles the show’s adventure, tone, and energizes the viewer. I get that ‘Watashi wa’ is essentially in english ‘I’ and a sentence particle, but how ZAQ sings it in the open sounds like they are saying with my English speaking ears “Fantasy wa”. The ending and its song ‘ailes’ by TRUE provides a cool down tone after the episode ends. Artemis and Priapos as owls sway metronome-like and interact with Ezekiel as a dove giving the ending a hypnotic effect while endearing pictures of Maria and Joseph provide a warm effect even if it’s cold outside. The ending song by TRUE makes me think a choir of nuns gathered to sing a pop song. Also, I have no qualms from either the Japanese or the English dub.

Middle Ages Bonne and Claide
Watch out they have an arm canon!!!

Pros, Cons, and Other Thoughts:

-Pros:

  • The warfare has many tactical elements not normally seen in anime
  • It delivers a story and knows when to be funny, fun, or serious
  • The show knows how to leave the viewer wanting more
  • simal dubbed

-Cons:

  • When a scene goes wrong it can get dark (ok)/super-serious (ok)/Surprise-one-sex-scene-that-only-shows-sides-and-hips (Catholics, my eyes!!!)
  • Even when it’s simal casted it’s not sooner released onto hard disc, ERRR
  • Some characters aren’t in the manga
  • I can’t fathom why a sequel manga can happen when the story in the anime is very much ties everything in a knot

-Other Thoughts:

Let’s get this out of the way; the weapon combat is probably more realistic and tactical for the time period portrayed. Using the shield as a sub-weapon, taking advantage of the sword’s hilt to gain advantage of a clash, taking advantage of a garb to either disarm or gain the advantage, and so much more. I’m not an expert in Middle Age combat, but it’s obvious that Masayuki Ishikawa has done his research. The only piece of tech I’m not sure was prototyped or fiction is a prosthetic arm. If it’s designed or inspired by Götz von Berlichingen’s design.

Maria other weapons

Wow this show impressed me. It managed to hook my attention and I couldn’t stop watching. Watching the show one episode per week should be a crime.

Maria's typical Tuesday evening

The story starts off when Anne and her mother, Bonne, arrive at Maria’s cottage in order to obtain medicine for Anne’s grandmother, Martha.  As the mother and child enter the cottage, the two are afraid of Maria because of her fearsome disguise. Maria gives them the medicine along with instructions. Suddenly something swoops in from the window and crashes. Maria’s first familiar, Artemis, transforms from owl form to Succubus and turns on the lights. Next she takes off Maria’s costume which makes Anne gush at how cute Maria really is.

Maria's foiled

The mother and child leave happily from the cottage. Maria fusses at Artemis for ruining her act as Artemis fusses as it wasn’t necessary at all. The conversation end with the succubus being tired from last night’s information gathering as she complains about how her jaw is sore. Maria is puzzled as to the succubus’s jaw is sore. Oh that Maria is SUCH a virgin.

Maria's Virgin Blush

Now let’s go through the characters’ challenges without spoiling the show. Joseph is ever kind and thoughtful. His development gets suspenseful at times and even more so towards the end. Garfa is best compared to Griffith from ‘Berserk’. The addition of Lolotte to better demo-straight what woman historically did during the Middle Ages as well as mess with Garfa. He is a mercenary who wants to become a knight and he becomes friends with Joseph. Bernard can be seen as Disney’s Frollo character from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” in his constant obsessing over a rebel; he gets emotionally aroused by the challenge of freeform thought and intellect and finds Maria very similar to the Virgin Mary. Archangel Michael looks so similar to Clare from ‘Claymore’ that I’m questioning if and when he turned into an archangel that he maintained his manhood. This Archangel does provide quite the fatal threat for Maria.

Archangel Michael witch hunts Maria

A witch’s familiar is generally a spirit or animal guide that serves the witch for what deeds must be carried out. In this show a witch chooses an animal from which the envisioned familiar is created. Sadly for Priapos, he doesn’t have a poking popping penis which provides particular positions of female or Greek love pleasing perversions which is the purpose of being an incubus. This pisses off Vis, a fellow witch from England who wanted some Priapos man meat, all because Maria keeps pure thoughts.

How Maria angers her witch friend Viv

This is the second time I’ve watched a simal dub, and it’s not bad. I also watched the sub as well and like I mentioned before I have no problems with either. What angers me is that Funimation hasn’t released or at least announced a release of the home hard disc. I get that there is a time issue upon releases in each country, but don’t leave everyone in the dark. Then again where is the release of both Finale movies for Heaven’s Lost Property and Date-A-Live? Good or bad, at least complete what you’ve started.

I have not read the manga but one difference that’s been pointed out in circles is that some characters are added in the anime. I can’t say if it’s a good or bad change because I don’t know what the atmosphere or events of the manga provides. One question I’ve left to ask myself is how is there a sequel manga? The events of the anime tied everything together in its conclusion. Wait, what’s this spoiler edited Amazon summary say?

Maria and her friends are back in a collection of stories that offer a glimpse into their past, present, and future. From Viv’s journey to France, to a day in the life of Maria and her owl companions, and even a brief peek at an event, Maria the Virgin Witch: Exhibition allows fans of the series to enjoy their favorite characters once more with new and untold stories.”

Ooo, maybe I’ll get the story of how Maria got her staff. I know what manga I’m buying next.

*Pro’s, Con’s, and Other Thoughts Rating: 3.7/5 (B)

Priapos pleas for a penus“Mistress, I need a penis for my tasks at hand,” Priapos pleas.

Pace:

-Was there meaningful action in the episodes?

Watching each episode is like a hand full of pop corn. To answer the question, yes, I must have more!!!

-Did the actions and situations occur at a tempo natural to the genre?

Yes, just like it was told from a great story teller. I must watch the next episode to know what happens next!!!

-Did the resolution of each situation affect the flow of the episodes?

Many events start to happen; some events begin to unfold or about to develop after another one problem is concluded. Well… I finished the show. That was a very satisfying ending to this series.

Note: Due to my own belief and further defining anime as a pop art, no rating will ever receive a 0, 1, or 5 (a Z, F, or A in my book). For this reason is that times will change as opinions. Anything can be far greater or worse than before. That’s just human triumph and error.

Misc: Questions from Jimmy the Reader

Maria's determination

Jimmy: Does is Virginity matter?

Me: You can take this of any three ways. The viewer could relate this to the Bible with the Virgin Mary and Joseph. Typically with the virginity limitation it’s used for holy magic or the use of magic for certain settings. This series is geared to initially sell to the Japanese Junior High to High School age.

Maria's uhh face

Jimmy: Why are the assassins attacking the villages that their dukes pay them to protect?

Me: Maria is stopping the paid soldiers from fighting. They get paid a sum of money and are allowed to loot, plunder, and ransom from the enemy, The British, which provides them a better means to live and arm themselves. With no way to feed the tiger, they are more like to no eat the hand.

Joseph the silly French Man

Jimmy: What’s a Cernunnos?

Me: It’s a Celtic god with horns. Its other name is Herne the Hunter and is on the Pillar of the Boatmen. This Pillar is from a Gallo-Roman monument that dates back to the 1st decade. The Pillar is now located in Musée National du Moyen Age in Paris. Nothing is truly known of its origin but in Wiccan it is speculated that he is a god of the season in a year with the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Another name in Wiccan is Kernunno. I’m not Wiccan, so I offer my apologies if I’m really off.

Maria's Cernunnos

Jimmy: What’s with the alliteration?

Me: I’m working on my vocabulary and to change up how some of these reviews read.
